Katherine Gavin

Katherine grew up where the world is flat – in Southwest Minnesota, specifically, a town called Worthington. Katherine eagerly left the windy plains for the metropolis of Minneapolis where she earned a Bachelors of Science degree in biology and a minor in chemistry from Augsburg College after four years of hard work. While at Augsburg, Katherine received a grant to do a year-long undergraduate research project, Molecular Taxonomy and the pursuit of a plant barcode. This is where her passion for scientific research began. She has been accepted into the entering class of 2008 at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she has also applied for admission into the dual degree (MD/PhD) program.

Katherine loves to take the road less traveled. Recently, she has been to Alakamisy Ambohimaha, Madagascar with Habitat for Humanity, Uspantan, Guatemala with HELPS International, and New Orleans, LA with Lutheran Disaster Relief. She wishes she could afford to travel to many other exotic places, but apparently they don’t include that in medical school financial aid packets.

While she dreams of future travels, Katherine enjoys the outdoors. She loves to go running, biking, hiking, camping, and rock climbing. Injury permitting, she is planning on running her first marathon at the end of June. She loves to be with family and friends, especially her adorable English bulldog, Oscar.

Katherine is heading up the Canine Osteosarcoma project, looking at specific gene expression patterns from tumors of different breeds that may help identify heritable influence for this disease. She loves being in the lab, and learning new things everyday.
