Genetics of Canine Osteosarcoma in Large and Giant Breed Dogs

This study is being conducted by Dr. Kenine Comstock from the University of Michigan and Dr. Kerstin Lindblad-Toh from the Broad Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Please note that samples from every eligible participant that is included in the Modiano/Breen osteosarcoma study can also be included in this project. Separate consent is not required. If you do not wish your dog’s samples to be included in both studies, please inform the principal investigators at the time of enrollment.

Study Goals
The major goal of this project is to identify genetic factors that contribute to the onset and progression of canine osteosarcoma. This will eventually allow for development of tests and treatment strategies that can accurately predict osteosarcoma risk and improve outcomes, respectively.

Funding
The study is funded by the AKC Canine Health Foundation.

Financial incentive
There is no financial incentive to participate in this study.

Eligibility
If you are the owner of a Greyhound, Great Dane, Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees, Borzoi, Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Rottweiler or other large or giant-breed dog, you can help!

Healthy (unaffected) dogs and dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma are eligible for the study.

  • Unaffected dogs should be over 6 years old (and must have no other cancer diagnosis).
  • Affected dogs can be of any age; a copy of the pathology report that confirms the diagnosis is required, but this study does not require submission of tumor samples or treatment for participation.
  • Pedigree information (back to grandparents) and including registration numbers are required for each participant.
  • For this specific study, it is not necessary to submit samples from dogs that are related to affected participants. If participation is for this study only, please do not send samples from dogs that are related within two generations (share a grandparent).

Procedures for participation
To participate in the study, please request a sample collection kit from:
