Gene Therapy for Osteosarcoma

Status
Open

Funding
The study is funded by grants from the National Cancer Institute and the AKC Canine Health Foundation to ApopLogic Pharmaceuticals, LLC.

Study Goals
The goal of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of a gene therapy approach that stimulates the immune system to fight cancer

Where is the study being conducted?
This is a single institution study being done at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. You can go directly to the CSU Animal Cancer Center website if you click here, then scroll down to the study called GENE THERAPY FOR CANINE OSTEOSARCOMA

Eligibility criteria
Because the study requires multiple visists, it is generally open to patients living within 100 miles of the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado State University or to individuals who can travel to Fort Collins and stay for the duration of treatment. In order to qualify for this study, patients must have been diagnosed with stage I or II osteosarcoma, with a tumor located in a bone of a leg. Patients must be in good health prior to starting this study. Clients must commit to a surgical amputation of the affected leg, followed by chemotherapy as the treatment plan. The disease may not have spread (that is metastasized) beyond the primary site in the leg. Enrollment into the study will be delayed by two weeks for those patients that have received steroids (such as prednisone or dexamethasone). Patients must not have received chemotherapy or radiation therapy prior to presentation.

Owner Responsibilities:
The owner is financially responsible for costs associated with the diagnosis and staging of the disease (such as blood tests, chest X-rays, biopsy). Additionally, the owner is responsible for the costs of surgery and chemotherapy treatment in excess of the sponsor's $1500.00 contribution. The owner must commit to the entire protocol. The owner is required to make and keep all appointments.

Financial Incentives:
Once enrolled in the study, the costs associated with all study-related visits are paid by the study. Additionally, $1500.00 will be credited to the invoice at the time of surgical amputation of the affected leg. Should your pet require hospitalization due to side effects of the gene therapy, the study will cover these charges.
