more than 300 samples collected for hemangiosarcoma research!

An encouraging confluence of events took place at the Portuguese Water Dog National Specialty in Pennsylvania last September. The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America and The Portuguese Water Dog Foundation coordinated a blood draw with Dr. Elaine Ostrander from the National Human Genome Research Institute of the NIH to obtain samples for research into heritable traits that contribute to hemangiosarcoma risk.

The blood draw event was spurred by the long term interest of the breed club to combat this disease, but the motivation of many owners that have dealt with the disease cannot be understated. Tori was the poster child for this event. We are sad to report that she lost her battle with hemangiosarcoma shortly after the national specialty. We, and the rest of the 'dog community' extend our deepest gratitude to Tori's family for their help with this event and our sincere sympathy for their very personal loss. Tori's legacy, along with all the other Portuguese Wtare Dogs that have participated in this project, will be to help us beat this dreadful disease.
