How our Program Works

Our program consists of a clinical oncology service and our research enterprise. Our goals in the clinic are to provide compassionate and effective care for pets with cancer. Our intent is to restore function as needed, and to provide the longest life extension while maintaining the highest possible quality of life. We also are increasing our activity in translational research pursuing novel clinical trials. Our goals in the research labs are to find causes of cancer in pets and in humans, to understand mechanisms that dictate tumor behavior and tumor progression, and to find targets that will allow us to prevent, control, and treat different types of cancer. A major component of our research efforts are to determine how cancers that occur in animals are similar to cancers that occur in humans, so we can apply what we learn in our companion animals to people and vice versa.

We try to honor donor wishes for any contribution. Many “grateful clients” donate money to support research into the disease that afflicted their pet. Others may wish to support other projects for other reasons. Some provide unrestricted funds. We apply unrestricted funds to a variety of areas, including supporting pilot projects that do not have other sources of funding, travel for trainees and staff to attend and present their work at meetings, defray costs of collecting samples, etc.

An abbreviated menu of projects in comparative oncology that are at different stages of development in the research arena is available here, for those who wish to support one (or more) specific projects. We do not expect or require any one donor to provide full support for any project, but we will earmark funds as requested. While the list represents a wide variety of projects, it is by no means the complete list of ongoing projects in our comparative cancer programs. Please contact us at lab@modianolab.org if you wish to discuss specific areas of interest.

We work with several foundations to tailor support to each donor's interest. The Minnesota Medical Foundation has established The Comparative Oncology Fund (#1464) to recognize the importance of our dual mission to benefit people and pets. The Will-Power Fund (#2001) at the University of Minnesota Foundation also supports research in comparative oncology with special emphasis on the human-canine connection in cancer research and treatment. The Kate Koogler Canine Cancer Fund was established to support research that will improve outcomes for people and pets with primary bone cancers.

Regardless of your choice, please state that the donation should be applied to the Animal Cancer Care and Research Program/Comparative Oncology Program at the University of Minnesota.

The Minnesota Medical Foundation, the University of Minnesota Foundation, and the Kate Koogler Canine Cancer Fund are all 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, and the full amount of your donation would be tax deductible.
